About Blue Creek, Belize
In the 1920s, Old Colony Mennonites moved from Canada to Mexico. They left Canada because the government failed to honour some of the privileges that had been worked out by their forefathers before moving from Russia to Canada in the 1870s. After some years in Mexico and after becoming quite successful, they realized that they were running out of suitable farmland. Severe droughts in the later years had resulted in very poor crops. In the late 1950s, a delegation was elected to travel to British Honduras (now called Belize) to look for land that would suit their needs. They found a large parcel of land in the northern part of the country that was for sale. After about two years, some thirty families were ready to make the move to the Blue Creek area of Belize.
